Sassotondo was founded 20 years ago by Carla Benini (agronomist) and Edoardo Ventimiglia (documentary maker), who left Rome in search of a new life. This they found in the rolling Tuscan hills of Maremma
Edoardo and Carla placed a placed their focus on the relationship between the plant and the soil and the eco-sustainability of their crops. This created the foundations for their now certified bio-dynamic farm.
Estate
The winery’s 72 hectares are situated in ancient Etruscan territory between Pitigliano and Sovana. Surrounded by woods and based at the foot of the extinct volcano Monte Amiata, the soil is fertile and rich in volcanic minerals.
10 hectares are planted to vine, with a priority given to autochthonous varieties such as Ciliegiolo, referred to by the producers as their ‘star’.
The winery has been certified as organic since 1994, and are today biodynamic.
