Emilia-Romagna

Ancient white variety mentioned in Pier d'Crescenzi of Bologna (1230-1310). Grows almost exclusively on the fotthills between Bologna and Rimini. Sub varieties called Albana Gentile or Albana di Bertinoro – produce the finest wines but have lower yields & smaller berries. Some sweet and interesting late harvest types also.

"of the red stems", from around the village of Castelvetro, south of Modena on the lower slopes of the Apennines. Other sub-varieties more associated with volume production are Marianni, ontericco, Mastri and Grappello.

Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro

The most delicate, the most prized and the most pricey of the Lambrusco grapes, from the plains surrounding the village of that name to the North of Modena. Other sub-varieties more associated with volume production are:Marianni, Montericco, Mastri and Grappello.

Lambrusco di Sorbara

White grape that makes considerable volumes in this region despite its obscurity internationally. Both frizzante and still.

Colli Bolognesi

Named so for its sausage shape bunches – "little salami". From the village of Santa Croce, east of Sorbara. Salamino will often be planted in with Sorbara as the latter has pollination problems, though the wines are generally vinified apart. Other sub-varieties more associated with volume production are:Marianni, Montericco, Mastri and Grappello.

This is THE noble wine of Emilia Romagna with a history reaching back to medieval times. The grapes are grown in the hills that stretch up to the Appennines south of Bologna towards Rimini. In its dry version, it is mineral and soft with a classic citrus character. Also comes in amabile (demi sec) sweet and passito versions

Clearly the Romagnans claim that Sangiovese is indeed native to their land and was proudly named after an area called Monte Giove, hence deriving the name sanguis di jovis and eventually sangue di giove (jupiter's blood) and hence Sangiovese. The vineyards can be located in excellent expositions in the hills or on the vast, fertile plains and hence the variation in quality and style.
