Emilia-Romagna

Regional detail

Location

The heart of Italy geographically and for food. Famous for cheap red sweet fizz: Lambrusco, being churned out by Italy’s biggest wineries. The reality is that Emilia Romagna produces some 1st class wines, both red and white.

Climate

Typical central Italian climate of hot summers and short winters. Emilia is more central and hence more continental and Romagna is closer to the Adriatic and more maritime, Mediterranean.

Topography

The Po has perhaps influenced this area the most with its vast flood plain and basin. To the south, towards Tuscany, the land rises towards the Appennines making more serious reds and whites.

Soils

Mixed with alluvuial influence from the Po especially on the plains and the provenance of most of the IGT wines, accounting for around 30% of the regions production
